Training has started for the 2008 Football Season
Training for the Senior Team started last Monday, 26 November at 6pm. Training will be held every Monday and Wednesday at 6pm, meeting at Maddingly Park until Christmas. The Ground is currently being re-sown and should be perfect for the start of the 2008 Season and while that is happening we will meet at the Park and where we will end up is any ones guess – adds a new dimension to training, lots of variety. All players are welcome. It is great to see six U16’s and 1 U15’s (good on you Brad) Player (s) attending. The roll up from the U18’s to Senior’s is also encouraging with almost 40 from their number for the 1st Training Session.
Come along and be prepared for a tough session – this is not only about fitness but learning to take your body to places it may not have been before which will only hold you in good stead for those infamous close last quarters during the next season.
When you come to training, remember the 3 Golden Rules. You must:
- Wear white socks;
- Wear football shorts; and
- Bring your own water bottle.
Any breach of these Rules will see the whole training squad penalised with 20 Push-ups per breach at the end of the Session. Get yourself down to training lads.

Football Best & Fairest 2007 - Seniors
Tyson Shea won the Senior Best & Fairest Award in his first Senior season in 2006 and, because of that and his leadership history even at his young age and an impressive pre-season under new Coach Dion Miles saw Tyson named the Cobra’s Club Captain for 2007 at the age of 18.
In this, his second Senior season, and his 1st as Club Captain, he secured his 2nd running Best & Fairest, this time however, tying with Portland newcomer and excellent on-baller, Jarrod Holt.
Seniors Best & Fairest VOTES
1st Tyson Shea 60
Jarrod Holt 60
2nd Jai Miles 48
3rd Daniel Velden 23
FOOTBALL BEST & FAIREST 2007 - RESERVES
Michael Dodd, Reserves Captain Coach won the Best & Fairest and showed the way yet again with great leadership in the same manner as he has done as the Club’s Games Record Holder with 275 Senior Games. His experience brought a charisma to the side, one of strong, tough and skilful football which fell short, only slightly, from seeing this side into the finals. A very encouraging season.
Reserves Best & Fairest VOTES
1st Michael Dodd (Capt/Coach) 69
2nd Dan Larkin 45
3rd Alistair Hill 37
FOOTBALL BEST & FAIREST 2007 – UNDER 18’s
Mathew Wheelahan won the Under 18’s Best & Fairest. Mathew is a hard doer who always puts in and is a fine Team contributor and he capped of an excellent season with this win. Matt is the son of Greg who played 143 Senior Cobra Games and, for the rest of that Family Tie, please refer to the Article of the same Title.
It was also an excellent effort by Mark Hansen, Runner Up, because Mark was an Under 16’s player who, due to the Club not being able to field an Under 16’s side after Round 5, stepped up to play under 18’s. Well done Mark.
Under 18 Best & Fairest VOTES
1st Mathew Wheelahan 62
2nd Mark Hansen 40
3rd Rhys McNay 32
4th Dylan O’Brien 30
5th Jamie Law 27

Dion Miles – Senior Coach
Dion is a former North Melbourne mid fielder who was a supplementary list player with the Kangaroos in 1996, when the Club were AFL Premiers. He was drafted to the Roo’s senior list the following year and in that year, 1977, he won the Reserves Best and Fairest. A promising career looked assured and in 1998 he played 2 Senior games for the Roo’s and was in the squad of 25 for their Preliminary Final side but on the Tuesday before the Game he snapped his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and didn’t resume until Round 13 in 1999. That 1st game back saw him get a collapsed lung forcing him out for the next 2 games and he played the last 6 of the year.
Dion was cut by the Roo’s the following year which, he philosophically says, was expected for a 5’ 10’’ mid fielder with knee problems. While Dion was skilful enough to get drafted to the Kangaroos who had won the 1996 Premiership, were favourites in ’97, Grand Finalists in ’98 (which he says they should have won) and Premiers again in ’97, he has often pondered what might have been had be been drafted by Hawthorn who were wooden spooner’s at the time.
Dion then went to Werribee in 2000 but again snapped his ACL as well as his Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) and was 12 months out of football. He resumed playing with Hoppers Crossing but 15 minutes into the first game he snapped his Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL). Realising his playing days were definitely over, he took a role as the Werribee Tigers Reserves Coach Assistant under then Senior Coach and now Hawthorn Coach, Alistair Clarkson. Dion then spent 2 years as Assistant Coach with the Western Jets, followed by Senior Coaching stints at East Point in the Ballarat Football League, Leongatha in the West Gippsland League and 2008 will be his second season with Bacchus Marsh where he has bought a block of land and intends to build and live. Good news for the Club because Dion is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about his football and will bring results to the Club.
